Portugal failed to make a winning start to the 2026 World Cup. Facing the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Seleção had to settle for a 1-1 draw despite dominating large portions of the match and taking the lead through João Neves.
João Neves admitted his frustration after Portugal’s disappointing opening result. The PSG midfielder, playing in his very first World Cup match, did not hide his disappointment after the final whistle. “The result is a bit disappointing,” the Portuguese international acknowledged.
João Neves Reflects on Portugal’s Draw
Despite dropping two valuable points, the Paris Saint-Germain player refused to be overly negative. “Of course I’m happy because it’s my first World Cup match. But the most important thing is the team’s performance,” explained Neves. He also felt Portugal had started the game strongly: “We began well, with intensity and rhythm, but we were missing the victory.”
Having scored on his debut in the competition, the midfielder is now focused on the future. “We will analyze this match and improve. I’m disappointed with the result, but we have to keep our heads up and move forward,” he concluded.
Portugal can already afford no further mistakes when they face Uzbekistan next Tuesday if they want to avoid a major disappointment and an early exit from the tournament.
