The condition of the Parc des Princes pitch continues to make headlines. With PSG’s match against Rennes ultimately forced to move elsewhere, new details have emerged explaining why the playing surface in Paris deteriorated so badly in recent days.
PSG will not host Rennes at the Parc des Princes on Sunday evening because the pitch is in extremely poor condition. According to Onze Mondial, temperatures of up to 51°C were recorded at grass level. The extreme heat is believed to have significantly accelerated the deterioration of the turf following several successive heatwaves in the Paris region.
Extreme Heat and Fungus Damage the Parc des Princes Pitch
However, the heat was not the only factor. According to L’Équipe, the pitch was also affected by a fungus, which considerably worsened its condition. PSG says it first raised the alarm on Saturday, while the LFP stated on Wednesday that it had been informed on Monday. Experts inspected the pitch on Wednesday morning and concluded that its condition did not allow for the safety of the players to be guaranteed, prompting the Competitions Commission to prevent PSG-Rennes from being played at the Parc des Princes.
To restore the surface as quickly as possible, PSG has reportedly chosen to prioritize the natural regrowth of the grass. For the time being, the club does not intend to replace the most heavily damaged areas with new turf. This approach should allow the pitch to recover gradually over the coming days, with PSG gaining additional time because the Rennes match will now be played at Roazhon Park.
The objective is now clear: PSG wants the Parc des Princes pitch to be back in perfect condition for the next home match against Monaco on September 4. The Parisian club hopes to put this highly unusual episode behind it and avoid any further disruption to its home schedule.
