It is now official: Nuno Mendes has been handed a three-match suspension following his red card against RC Lens in the Trophée des Champions. It is a significant punishment that will deprive Luis Enrique of his left-back for Paris Saint-Germain’s next three matches.
The disciplinary committee showed no leniency toward the Portugal international. Nuno Mendes will therefore miss the games against Rennes, Lille and Monaco.
Nuno Mendes ruled out against Rennes, Lille and Monaco
His suspension begins this Sunday with the trip to Roazhon Park to face Rennes on the opening matchday of Ligue 1. Nuno Mendes will then be unavailable against Lille before also missing the home game against Monaco, scheduled for September 4.
It is inevitably a selection headache for Luis Enrique. Nuno Mendes plays a major role in PSG’s system thanks to his pace, ability to break through lines and attacking contribution down the left. The Spanish coach will therefore have to find an alternative for these three matches, with summer signing Lucas Digne naturally emerging as one of the main options to replace the Portuguese international.
Nuno Mendes will now have to wait before returning to competitive action. PSG will begin their Ligue 1 campaign without one of their regular starters, with three matches to navigate before their first-choice left-back is available again.
