Football is about to witness the introduction of a brand new card: the blue card. Here’s what it’s going to be used for.
A new rule will be tested in football: the blue card. It will be given to players who commit a foul that prevents a deemed dangerous attack or if they vehemently protest to the referee. The player will then be sent off the field for ten minutes.
Two blue cards in a match will equate to a red card. A blue card followed by a yellow card will also result in a red card.
The official announcement of this innovation is expected to be made this Friday by the IFAB. Initially, this rule will not be used in major competitions such as the Champions League or the Euros but will be tested, for example, during the FA Cup.
In a statement released on Thursday evening, FIFA wished to provide some clarification by referring to “premature information.” “Such trials, if implemented, should be limited to responsibly conducted tests at lower levels, a position that FIFA intends to reiterate when this agenda item is discussed at the IFAB AGM (annual general meeting) on March 2nd.”
