Ousmane Dembélé has moved to clear the air over his relationship with Kylian Mbappé. Asked on Thursday about rumors of tension between the two France stars, the PSG forward insisted there was no problem with the national team captain. His answer came with a smile when the now-famous term “the chosen one” was mentioned.
Dembélé clearly saw the question coming. “Hello Ousmane, delighted that you are the chosen one to face us today,” a journalist told him. Dembélé immediately broke into a broad smile before regaining his composure. Asked about Mbappé, he replied: “Kylian and I have spoken. We sit next to each other at the table. There’s no problem.” His comments come after several weeks of speculation surrounding their relationship.
The “chosen one” comment behind the controversy
The story began with comments made by Kylian Mbappé during the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. Speaking about Dembélé, the Real Madrid forward said his compatriot had “always been seen as a talented player,” while he himself had “always been seen as the chosen one.” The remarks sparked plenty of reaction, with Dembélé later responding publicly by emphasizing his hard work and career path. Ahead of the France camp, several media outlets then reported that relations between the two players had cooled. RMC Sport notably reported, citing a member of the French delegation, that they were still talking and sitting next to each other at meals, although some distance appeared to have developed. There was, however, no suggestion of an open clash or a complete breakdown in their relationship.
Mbappé had already attempted to put an end to the controversy before the start of the international break. “There is no tension,” the France captain insisted, saying his relationship with Dembélé remained intact. Other reports also claimed that the two players had spoken to clarify the situation, with Marcus Thuram reportedly acting as an intermediary. Dembélé’s latest comments therefore reinforce the same message: despite the speculation, he and Mbappé continue to sit next to each other during France team meals.
Dembélé’s smile when he heard the words “chosen one” nevertheless showed that Mbappé’s remark had not gone unnoticed. But publicly, both players are now delivering the same message: there is no problem between them. Mbappé has since left the France camp after suffering a left knee injury against Turkey, while Dembélé continues the international break with Les Bleus.
