Hardly qualified for the Champions League final against Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain is already facing a major issue in the French capital: the organization of a fan zone for May 30. After the scenes of celebration across Paris on Wednesday night, the city council wants to set up a huge free public gathering to watch the final in Budapest.
The Mayor of Paris has spoken about PSG almost nonstop since his election in March. Emmanuel Grégoire confirmed his intention to create a massive fan zone so Parisian supporters can experience the event together. “We want this final to be a huge celebration,” he explained on RMC, while also insisting on the need for a secure environment.
Security Concerns Around the PSG Celebration
Behind the scenes, however, the topic is already extremely sensitive. The night of celebrations after Bayern vs PSG was marked by several incidents, including fireworks, clashes with police, attempted intrusions onto the ring road and more than 120 arrests across the Paris area. A situation that is seriously worrying the authorities.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez publicly criticized the city council, regretting an announcement made “without prior discussion” with the Paris police headquarters. While he did not completely reject the idea of a fan zone, he stressed the need for a massive security operation and promised a “very firm” response in the event of further trouble.
Another complication is the packed schedule already planned for May 30 in the Paris region. Several major events are set to take place the same evening, including Aya Nakamura at the Stade de France, Damso at La Défense Arena and Roland-Garros. Enough to make the organization around PSG and this historic final even more difficult.
