Lucas Digne’s likely arrival at Paris Saint-Germain could have far greater consequences than simply strengthening the left-back position. By signing the France international, Luis Enrique would mainly gain new options to reshape his midfield.
PSG are expected to look slightly different this season. João Neves, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz will remain key figures, but Désiré Doué and Lucas Beraldo could also feature more regularly in central areas. According to L’Équipe, Beraldo should continue to be used in midfield next season, while Doué could also play more often through the middle, confirming PSG’s intention not to sign another midfielder this summer.
Doué and Beraldo Set for Central Roles
Already tested in midfield, Beraldo could receive more playing time there. Digne’s arrival would allow Lucas Hernandez to move into central defence more frequently, freeing the Brazilian for a more permanent switch into midfield. Luis Enrique values Beraldo’s passing ability, composure under pressure and contribution to build-up play.
Doué is also expected to become a major option in central areas. Capable of playing out wide, as a number 10 or deeper in midfield, the Frenchman offers valuable versatility. PSG believe they already have enough solutions with Doué, Beraldo, Senny Mayulu and Fabian Ruiz, which is also why the club ended its interest in Ayyoub Bouaddi despite making indirect enquiries.
Digne could therefore be the first piece of a tactical domino effect. His arrival would provide immediate cover for Nuno Mendes, allow Hernandez to play more centrally and push Beraldo into midfield. Unless there is a late change of plan, PSG will not recruit a midfielder this summer, instead relying on Doué’s development, Beraldo’s positional transition and the contract extensions of Mayulu and Fabian Ruiz.
