A performance that could already leave some PSG supporters with doubts.
Before the France vs Spain clash, news broke that Digne was set to rejoin PSG. The announcement surprised many. Some fans welcomed the move, while others remained skeptical, recalling his difficult first spell in Paris a decade ago. Now, ten years later, the former academy product is on the verge of returning.
Digne’s Nightmare Before His PSG Return
The 32-year-old is expected to sign a three-year contract with PSG, with the club planning to activate his release clause—reported to be under €10 million—after the World Cup. The player has already agreed to join the Ligue 1 champions, but the timing of the news could hardly have been worse. Starting against Spain, Digne conceded the penalty that allowed La Roja to take the lead after fouling Lamine Yamal in the box. Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the spot in the 22nd minute before Spain secured a 2-0 victory to eliminate France.
Digne’s display was heavily criticized afterward. He received a 2/10 rating from L’Équipe, one of the lowest marks among the French players, with his defensive struggles and costly penalty highlighted. For PSG, however, the transfer remains part of a long-term plan. Signed to provide experience and serve as Nuno Mendes’ backup, Digne is still considered a sensible addition.
Yet his first impression among the Paris faithful could hardly have been more difficult, and he will now be eager to put this painful night behind him once his move to the French capital is officially completed.
