Joao Neves is going through a real media storm in Portugal. The PSG midfielder has become the target of a wave of criticism following what initially seemed like an innocent comment about Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal’s 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Joao Neves has found himself under attack, and even his partner has been dragged into the controversy. The PSG star simply stated that Ronaldo was now “a player like any other” within the Portuguese squad while also highlighting his enormous contribution to the national team. However, that remark was enough to spark outrage among some supporters of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Fake Post Fuels Social Media Backlash
For several days, social media has been flooded with hostile messages directed at Joao Neves. His teammate Bruno Fernandes was also criticized after publicly defending him. The situation has now moved far beyond football itself.
The controversy escalated when Joao Neves’ partner, Madalena Aragao, became the victim of a fake AI-generated screenshot. The fabricated post falsely claimed she had written a message aimed at Cristiano Ronaldo, saying: “Tell your GOAT to retire, he is very selfish.” Despite being completely fake, many users believed it was authentic and launched a wave of abuse against her, reportedly forcing her to restrict comments on her social media accounts.
The affair took another turn when Georgina Rodriguez, Ronaldo’s partner, appeared to react to the controversy with a comment that quickly went viral. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo posted a photo alongside several Portugal teammates, including the PSG midfielder, accompanied by the message: “Always united!” Many interpreted the post as an indirect response to the tensions surrounding Joao Neves. Ironically, the PSG player was one of Portugal’s standout performers against DR Congo and even scored his team’s only goal, yet the Ronaldo debate continues to dominate headlines and fuel social media battles across the country.
