PSG: Matvey Safonov Returned to Training Before Everyone Else

Matvey Safonov did not wait for Paris Saint-Germain’s official return to get back to work. With the squad due to resume collective training soon at the PSG Campus, the Russian goalkeeper has already returned to the pitch for an individual preparation programme.

PSG were initially expected back this Friday, but their return has now been postponed until next Monday. Luis Enrique has given a few extra days off to the players who did not take part in the World Cup, while the club’s internationals will return much later.

Safonov Gets a Head Start on His Teammates

Safonov, however, is already hard at work. The 27-year-old goalkeeper is training alone so that he can be fully prepared from the opening days of PSG’s pre-season. The two-time European champion is therefore one of the first Paris players to resume training this summer, immediately showing his ambition ahead of an intense battle for the starting spot.

Lucas Chevalier has decided to stay despite losing his place to the Russian, meaning competition between the goalkeepers is expected to be fierce this season. By returning before the rest of the squad, Safonov is making it clear that he wants to begin the campaign in the best possible condition and impress Luis Enrique as soon as collective training resumes.

The Russian goalkeeper intends to use these individual sessions to improve his fitness and quickly regain his sharpness. It is a strong message to the Parisian coaching staff before the full squad returns to the PSG Campus.
