Just days before the start of the 2026 World Cup, Didier Deschamps does not want to see any signs of overconfidence within the French national team. The France manager recently addressed comments made by Lucas Hernandez regarding Les Bleus’ attacking potential.
Speaking to GQ, Deschamps revealed that he personally called the Paris Saint-Germain defender after his ambitious remarks. The coach wanted to send a clear message: there is no need to make bold statements before the tournament has even begun.
Deschamps Calls for Focus Before the World Cup
“I called him afterward. You shouldn’t say things like that. There’s no point,” Deschamps explained, emphasizing his desire to keep the squad focused and shielded from unnecessary pressure ahead of the competition.
The French manager also reminded everyone that France is far from the only contender for the world title. In his view, around ten national teams have the quality required to lift the trophy, even if Les Bleus are naturally among the favorites before their opening match against Senegal.
Hernandez’s comments also brought back memories of Rayan Cherki’s controversial statement that France would “go there to crush everyone.” Deschamps had already clarified the situation at the time, insisting that France should not consider itself superior to all other favorites. Instead, the objective is to give everything on the pitch. “We’ll do everything possible,” he said.
“To reach the top, we’ll have to beat every team that stands in our way. We know our first three opponents — Senegal, Iraq, and Norway — but for now, we must stay focused on those matches.”
