Rumors surrounding Julián Álvarez are gaining momentum. According to several Spanish media outlets, the Atlético Madrid striker is looking to leave the Spanish capital and would favor a move to FC Barcelona.
Álvarez is said to have already chosen his next destination. The Argentine international reportedly wants to leave Atlético Madrid this summer. Speaking during the 2026 World Cup, he stated: “I spoke with the club’s officials. I think a transfer would be best for everyone. I want to fulfill my dream.” Those comments immediately reignited speculation about his future.
Barcelona Leads the Race
The most striking claim comes from transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who reports that Álvarez turned down both Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, allegedly saying: “Thank you, but I want to join Barcelona and nothing else.” However, there is currently no verified public statement from the player confirming those exact words. According to Romano, PSG did not take the rejection well.
What is certain is that the deal remains extremely complicated. Atlético Madrid considers Álvarez one of the cornerstones of its project and points interested clubs toward a massive €500 million release clause. Such a figure is naturally enough to discourage even Europe’s biggest clubs.
PSG remains attentive to the situation. The Argentine World Cup winner perfectly fits the profile sought by Luis Enrique thanks to his mobility, pressing ability, versatility, and top-level experience. For now, though, there is no indication that Paris is preparing a concrete offer, while Barcelona appears to be the player’s preferred destination. Financial difficulties at the Catalan club and Atlético’s firm stance could still complicate the operation, leaving the door open for other contenders if the transfer saga takes another twist.
