Marquinhos Sends Konaté to Real Madrid, No Room at PSG

Real Madrid have pulled off a major move in the transfer market. As expected for several weeks, Ibrahima Konaté officially joined the Spanish giants on Thursday. The France international center-back arrives as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Liverpool.

Long linked with Paris Saint-Germain as a potential reinforcement for the heart of the defense, Konaté was seen as a credible option for the club’s long-term project. However, Marquinhos’ decision to remain for at least one more season changed the situation and effectively closed the door on a move to Paris. Real Madrid took advantage of the opportunity, accelerated negotiations, and secured the defender’s signature.

Real Madrid Strengthen Their Defense

José Mourinho has therefore landed another high-profile recruit. After Bernardo Silva and Denzel Dumfries, the Portuguese manager welcomes yet another world-class player. Currently competing at the 2026 World Cup with France, Konaté already knows what his future holds. Upon returning from the United States, he will begin his La Liga adventure alongside Kylian Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Eduardo Camavinga.

The deal was made easier by PSG’s decision regarding its defensive plans. Real Madrid confirmed that the French defender has signed a four-year contract and is now tied to the club until June 2030. The 27-year-old will strengthen a defensive unit that Madrid wanted to rejuvenate and solidify.

From a financial perspective, the move is especially attractive for Los Blancos. No transfer fee was required, as Konaté was out of contract with Liverpool. Real Madrid have therefore secured one of France’s top defenders without spending a single euro on a transfer fee. The remaining question is how Mourinho will integrate him into his starting lineup, but one thing is certain: Konaté brings even more power, quality, and experience to an already formidable squad.
