Ander Herrera is back where it all began. After leaving Boca Juniors as a free agent, the Spanish midfielder has signed a one-year contract with Real Zaragoza, the club where he started his professional career.
At 36, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United midfielder has chosen to return home to help a club going through one of the most difficult periods in its history. Real Zaragoza are currently competing in Spain’s third division and hope Herrera’s experience can play a key role in their revival.
Herrera Returns Home to Lead Zaragoza’s Rebuild
“Real Zaragoza and Ander Herrera have reached an agreement for the return of the academy graduate, who has signed a one-season contract with the Blanquillos,” the Spanish club announced in an official statement.
Herrera came through Zaragoza’s youth academy before joining Athletic Bilbao in 2011. He later enjoyed spells with Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Boca Juniors. His return is seen as a major boost for the Aragonese club, which will rely on his leadership, experience and deep connection to the institution as it aims to climb back up the Spanish football pyramid.
