Could Nasser Al-Khelaïfi leave the heart of European football to pursue the FIFA presidency? According to talkSPORT, several UEFA member associations would like to see a credible challenger emerge to face Gianni Infantino in the next FIFA presidential election.
Could Paris Saint-Germain lose its iconic president? In charge of the club since Qatar’s takeover in 2011, Al-Khelaïfi is reportedly being backed by some European football figures as a potential candidate against Infantino. The Italian-Swiss administrator confirmed earlier this year that he intends to seek another term and is hoping to run unopposed, a scenario that is reportedly causing concern among several UEFA federations.
Nasser Al-Khelaïfi Emerges as a Potential FIFA Challenger
Among the names being discussed, Al-Khelaïfi has attracted growing attention. He could reportedly count on support from federations such as Belgium and Poland. His influence within European football is considerable, having led PSG since 2011 while also serving as chairman of the European Club Association, now known as European Football Clubs, and as a member of UEFA’s Executive Committee. Many executives reportedly see him as one of the few figures with the stature to mount a serious campaign against Infantino.
Despite that support, a candidacy remains highly unlikely. According to talkSPORT, Al-Khelaïfi currently has no intention of running for the FIFA presidency and would need to be persuaded to enter what would be a highly political contest. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin is also not expected to challenge Infantino, preferring to remain in his current role despite growing tensions between UEFA and FIFA. European federations are nevertheless eager to avoid an uncontested election, while other potential names—including Dariusz Mioduski, Victor Montagliani and Patrice Motsepe—have also been mentioned. FIFA’s next presidential election will take place during the 2027 Congress, with the electoral process officially opened on April 30, 2026.
