Lucas Chevalier would have gladly spared himself this digital storm. The PSG goalkeeper found himself accused of far-right sympathies after “liking” an Instagram post by Julien Aubert, in which the vice-president of the Republicans announced his support for the National Rally in the event of a duel with the New Popular Front.
The controversy escalated on Sunday, just hours after the hard-fought victory against Lyon (3-2). Chevalier responded that night with a lengthy Instagram story: according to him, this like was simply… an involuntary gesture while scrolling through his feed. “An accidental action,” he said, which does not reflect his beliefs at all.
“My image has been tarnished for a like that I didn’t even see”
The 24-year-old goalkeeper recounted discovering the accusations upon waking from his pre-match nap: “I was able to see what had been said about me the previous evening, regarding the fact that I liked a post on Instagram of a political orientation that I obviously do not share,” Lucas Chevalier wrote in an Instagram story resembling a statement.

“I’m not trying to convince you, but it’s disappointing to know that by scrolling and accidentally liking a post without realizing it, and then waking up from your nap to prepare for the match, you are informed that your image has been tarnished from top to bottom for an accidental action. It annoys me.”
“I’m not here to lay out my education and political claims because I am primarily a footballer. But it is certain that anyone who knows me knows very well how much I am a person whose parents and family instilled values and respect in me, and that I would never allow myself to think those things.”
The matter has taken on political significance. Éric Ciotti, a figure of the Union of the Right, denounced “racist insults” aimed at the player, proving that the debate has largely exceeded the sporting context. A controversy that leaves Chevalier stunned… and determined to defend his image.
